Proactive Tax Planning

Proactive tax planning can have a profound impact on your bottom line. Most financial accounting firms or accounting services just don’t do this. Regardless of the fact, that it’s worth tens of thousands of dollars a year to the small businesses that the financial accounting firm or CPA is working to serve. I have long contended that the Certified Public Accountant designation, also known as CPA, is the best marketed designation in the world. It is so good that people assume expertise, like proactive tax planning, that isn’t typically part of a CPA’s business. After all the A in CPA stands for accounting, CPAs are accountants not tax planners. This of course does not stop people from assuming that their tax preparer, accounting service or financial accounting firm, are in fact doing something that they do not do, which is proactive tax planning.

Fortunately, the American Institute of Certified Tax Coaches, is working diligently to fill this void. With record deficits, small businesses and entrepreneurs are going to become targets of a government that has run amok. Proactive tax planning is going to become more valuable. I know that this is a huge problem because I am not a CPA (I am a Certified Tax Coach aka CTC) and I continually find tax savings with my small business and entrepreneurial clients. Unfortunately, most accountants are historians, they record what has happened, but are not good at projecting what you should do and how you should do it.

Think of it this way, you need an artist not a scientist. A scientist sees only the intrinsic present value in the canvas, the paint and the labor to put it all together, and the scientist/accountant can evaluate if the combination was good. The artist can see the possibilities in bringing it all together to create something unique and good. Reframed (pun intended), an accountant can see what has happened and can then record this history in the most efficient manner they can, but it takes a CTC (Certified Tax Coach) to look at the tax code and see the possibilities of changing the outcome of next year’s history. So in other words, stop having someone record history and find someone to help you write history.
